Sanctuary

This tranquil artwork is a unique in its surrealism. Notice the size difference between the horses and the trees. The horses are dwarfed against this massive background, appearing almost Lilliputian. With the cool colors, shallow water and tranquil surroundings though, there is no sign of danger among the trees; thus the name of this composition, “Sanctuary”. Here you find the horses alone and preoccupied with their surroundings, totally content with no intention of moving out of their almost surrealistic environment.

Surrealism is an art style which sprang up shortly after WWI as a reaction to the war. It pertained to the merging of both a fantasy world and the rational world into “an absolute reality” called Surrealism. Today, surrealistic artworks are often referred to as Fantasy Art or Magic Realism.
